On This Spot NYC: Stories of Pioneering Women Artists

This summer, On This Spot NYC: Stories of Pioneering Women Artists proudly unveils Season Three: Lower East Side Artists. In collaboration with Allen Street Gallery a street-front exhibition features a series of short documentary videos profiling the groundbreaking contributions of women artists who helped shape the cultural and political fabric of the Lower East Side.

Displayed in the window of the Allen Street Gallery, the exhibition presents continuous screenings of short-form documentaries highlighting the neighborhood’s rich history through site-specific storytelling that immerses viewers in the city’s living memory.

On This Spot’s season three focuses on local iconic figures such as Martha Diamond, Nancy Graves, Grace Hartigan, Eva Hesse, Maya Lin, Kate Millett, Pat Passlof, Adrian Piper, Kiki Smith, Mildred Thompson and Susan Weil. As well as members of influential collectives like CoLab and Godzilla.

The stories unfold just steps from the screening, inside nearby walk-ups, tenement, lofts and old Synagogues of the area. The series brings to light the hidden histories that played out right in the heart of the neighborhood.

Through the lens of On This Spot’s award-winning digital storytelling, the exhibition invites the public to engage with a rarely told narrative of the women artists of the Lower East Side, one rooted in creativity, resistance, and transformation.
